Calicis

About the work
Calicis refers in both name and form to the chalice, an ancient symbol of receptivity and connection. The sculpture does not translate this symbolism literally, but explores the tension between an open, receptive form and a powerful upward movement.

A central, flowing line leads the eye upward through the sculpture, establishing a clear sense of direction. The sculpture therefore appears to rise from its base, almost as if it were ascending. Yet the greater mass of the lower section anchors the work, while the surrounding negative spaces counterbalance this weight. These empty spaces are essential to the composition: they lighten the mass and reinforce the sense of movement and openness.

The form is characterized by a rhythmic repetition of concave and convex surfaces. Their alternation creates a continuous interplay of light and shadow, allowing the sculpture to reveal a different character from every viewpoint. Smooth transitions connect the individual elements into an organic whole, in which tension and stillness exist side by side.

In the space
The translucent character of alabaster adds another dimension to the work. When the sculpture is carefully positioned in the light, light penetrates the stone and reveals its natural veining, subtle variations in colour and inner depth. Light therefore appears not merely to fall upon the surface, but to become part of the sculpture itself.

Calicis is intended exclusively for indoor placement. It is best displayed in a setting where natural or carefully positioned artificial light can enhance the translucency of the alabaster.
